When Hollie Freer-Jones joined Cadent in September, she wasn’t entirely sure which area of finance was right for her. Fresh out of Nottingham Trent University, where she studied Business Management, Accounting, and Finance while working part-time as a food and beverage supervisor, she knew she wanted a career in finance, but which path to take was still a question.
That’s exactly why the Future Professional Programme at Cadent stood out to Hollie. I wasn’t 100% sure which aspects of finance would be for me, so I loved the fact that this role allowed me to complete placements so I could gain knowledge in different finance functions and see what I enjoy the most,
Hollie shares.
Now, just a few months in, she’s already gaining hands-on experience across multiple finance functions, working towards her ACCA qualification, and completing a Level 7 apprenticeship in accountancy and tax. And while the workload is challenging, the support from her team has made all the difference. Everyone has been so welcoming and happy to teach and guide me within my role,
she says.
One of the highlights of her journey so far? The induction week. It was an enjoyable week and put me at ease before starting in the office. It is nice now that when I walk around Ansty, there are familiar faces within other departments.
Moments like these have helped solidify her decision – finance is without a doubt, the career she wants to pursue.
Since starting, Hollie has seen significant growth in her skills. Professional communication, digital skills (Excel & SAP), confidence, presenting,
she lists, noting how these will be invaluable in her career. But beyond the technical abilities, it’s the boost in confidence that has had the biggest impact – both personally and professionally.
Looking ahead, Hollie envisions herself nearing the end of her ACCA qualification in the next few years, preparing to take the next step in her career. Hopefully, I would be interviewing for roles within my preferred department,
she says, with the ultimate goal of becoming a finance manager.
Her advice to those considering a similar path? Look into graduate/future professional schemes as they provide you with a greater understanding of what you will enjoy the most!
